Your D.C. summer bucket list: 25 ways to have fun in the city

Summertime doesn’t bring only concerts to outdoor venues — theaters across the region offer alfresco plays and musicals through August. At Olney Outdoors, watch “The Phantom of the Opera” and “Les Misérables” veteran Norm Lewis perform July 25, or catch cabaret shows, drag performances, comedy nights and more (if you’d prefer an air-conditioned show, Olney’s production of “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical” starring internet celebrity Natalie Weiss runs through Aug. 25). At Wolf Trap in Vienna, find outdoor dance performances, operas featuring the National Symphony Orchestra, and musical movie sing-alongs, like a showing of “The Sound of Music” on Aug. 16. The Capital Fringe festival, featuring new theater, dance and “unclassifiable productions,” runs at venues like Theater J and unoccupied office properties through July 21. This year’s theme, “Happy,” explores questions of what happiness means in a national capital and how we experience joy. At the fully air-conditioned Kennedy Center, “Back to the Future” runs July 23 through Aug. 11, and “Mamma Mia!” runs Aug. 13 through Sept. 1.
